The Captain and the Kids and The Katzenjammer Kids were both creations of Rudolph Dirks...but not in that order. The Katzenjammer Kids debuted in 1897. Dirks was the first cartoonist to regularly express comic characters' dialogue using speech balloons. Dirks began a new strip, after lost of rights to The Katzenjammer Kids, which he first titled Hans and Fritz and then The Captain and the Kids. It featured the same characters seen in The Katzenjammer Kids, which was continued by its original publisher.

The two separate versions of the strip competed with each other until 1979, when The Captain and the Kids ended its six-decade run. The Katzenjammer Kids published its last strip on January 1, 2006, but is still distributed in reprints, making it the oldest comic strip still in syndication and the longest-running ever.

This compilation was taken from available copies of the Sparkler Comic #1 to #47. Sparkler Comic covers have been included where the strip characters have been featured. Regretfully the collection is slightly incomplete, but a great nostalgic read none the less.
