The Gold Coast's bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games is still alive following a high-level meeting with event bosses.

Without Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's backing by next month, however, the proposal won't succeed.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate pleaded his case for grabbing the Games after Victoria dumped them due to cost blowouts estimated at $3.4 billion.

A feasibility study estimates the event will generate more than $2 billion for the local economy, and ratepayers will not have to foot the $700 million bill.

The federal government will need to redirect $300 million of Victoria’s compensation bill to the city for the bid to be successful.
