Portland and Lewiston are home to substantial populations of individuals of African descent.

The influx of Somali immigrants increased significantly in the early 2000s, resulting in Maine having one of the largest Somali communities in the United States.

The activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have generated considerable concern.

Portland Councilor Wes Pelletier reported that business owners, educators, and university students have disseminated information to inform local communities about enforcement operations.
