Women’s entrepreneurship is a dynamic and growing force that is making an increasingly significant contribution to innovation and economic progress in the European Union. Despite this, persistent gender imbalances limit women’s participation in the entrepreneurial landscape.
Some numbers:
Women are 55% as likely as men to be self-employed.
Less than 4% of women are engaged in early-stage startups.
The gender gap in entrepreneurial participation across EU Member States is 7%.
Closing this gap could see an additional 5.5 million women become entrepreneurs across the EU, unlocking substantial economic potential. Although this gender gap is shrinking, the slow pace continues to hinder economic growth and job creation.
Women-led businesses face greater challenges in securing funding than their male counterparts, restricting their ability to launch and scale ventures. Moreover, the sectors in which women entrepreneurs are more likely to start businesses differ from the ones pursued by men and are less focused on innovation or exporting compared to male-led enterprises.
These sectors include personal services, retail, education, healthcare, mental care and tourism.
Empowering women entrepreneurs by addressing such challenges as access to professional networks, gender bias and education gaps through strong policy frameworks will strengthen Europe’s economy and foster an inclusive and competitive future.
