The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre opened in 1988.
East Kirkby Airfield opened on the 20th August 1943,
57 Squadron RAF (5 Group) were stationed there from August 1943 - Until Nov 1945 Equipped with Avro Lancaster`s
630 Squadron RAF (5 Group ) also stationed there from November 1943 - Until July 1945.
Also Equipped with Avro Lancaster`s
In total, 212 operations were carried out during the war , from which 121 Lancaster`s did not return another 29 aircraft were lost due to operational crashes or accidents.
The station closed in 1958 and was sold by the Government in 1964.
Lancaster NX611 was built by Austin Motors at Longbridge near Birmingham , in April 1945. She was one of the first of 150 Lancaster B Mk VII But never saw service with the RAF. In April 1952 she was bought by the French Government and flew Maritime Patrols for the French Naval Air Arm, in 1964 the French presented her to the Historical Aircraft Preservation Society, and flew her to Sydney for overhaul. Before being flown back to the UK. The 12,000 mile journey took 9 days and 70 flying hours and she landed at Biggin Hill on the 13th May 1965.
Fred and Harold Panton were determined to commemorate the death of their brother Christopher, who was killed on the Nuremberg raid in March 1944 and to all those that had served in Bomber Command had decided to purchase a WW2 Bomber.
Fred and Harold purchased NX611 in September 1983 and after a spell as a gate guard at RAF Scampton she was bought to East Kirkby and in 2017 the Challenge to return her to flying condition began.
