Have you ever wondered how many colours are in a rainbow? Is it seven, like the colours of the spectrum? Is it more than that? What about the grey areas between each colour – do those count as their own colours? Is it seven million million million million million million million million colours?! So many questions! Well, in this video we've got answers.
There are seven types of rainbow.
Rainbows are formed by refraction and reflection of light. There are seven different types of rainbows, but you can only see one at a time. These are twinned, multiple, full-circle, supernumerary, monochrome, reflected and fogbow.
The primary colours that make up the visible spectrum - red, orange, yellow, green and blue - appear in rainbows because of their particular wavelength and frequency. The angle at which you view a rainbow determines which colours you will see.
A rainbow might have its own spectrum of colours.
You might have noticed that rainbows are different in different parts of the world. You’ve probably seen a rainbow at least once, and it was probably near a body of water, like a lake or river. But that doesn’t mean it always has to be like this! Rainbows can appear anywhere there is moisture in the air, and they often appear when you least expect them—in winter, for example.
Rainbows come in all shapes and sizes, but generally speaking there are seven main colours that we see: red (at top), orange (second from top), yellow (middle), green (third from top), blue/purple (fourth from top), indigo/violet (fifth from top) and white/silver at bottom. Some people also say they can see pink or black near the end of their rainbow too.
But the number of colours that can be made up from the different wavelengths of light is infinite. Each colour may have a different number of wavelengths, and some colours have many more than others. For example, purple has about half as many wavelengths as red does, which means it's made up of fewer colours in the spectrum. Although we think of blue as being one single colour when you look at it on your computer screen or TV or phone screen, there are actually millions (and millions) of different combinations of those three colours that make up what we call "blue."
You could say a rainbow has an infinite number of colours.
There are many answers to this question, and they're all correct.
There are many different types of rainbows that have different colours, and some rainbows may have only two or three colours! Some people believe there is only one type of rainbow with seven coloured bands that look like a regular rainbow but without an arch connecting them together at the end. But there are many other kinds: double or triple arches; arcs with no tails; straight lines connecting multiple arcs together...the possibilities really just go on almost forever!

You can see this in the fact that some people only see seven colours while others may see as many as ten or twelve.
