I finally figured out who was laying the mystery eggs on our Caucasian Spruce tree. It's the Yellow Underwing Moth (Noctua pronuba) and this one has an interested Platnickina tincta spider interested. Over the past two years, I have observed these eggs every September. The caterpillars hatch and drop to the ground on silken threads. Noctua pronuba caterpillars will overwinter and feed on grasses, dock, and dandelions as they grow. Filmed on San Juan Island, WA September 12, 2024. Sorry for the shake in the video. It was a bit windy and I was trying to hold the camera in one hand and the flashlight in my other.
