Worse than Market Garden? Was this Operation Necessary?

Operation Varsity dropped 16.000 men just east of the Rhine in support of the Allied Rhine crossings in March 1945. Although planners had learned from the experiences of previous airborne attacks, the operation resulted in about 3000 casualties and plenty of debate.
