Описание к видео Satras and Namghars of Assam 2000 | The cornerstone of Assam's religious and cultural landscape

The film depicts the Satras and Namghars tribes of Assam that the great saint Shankardeva introduced in Assam approximately 500 years ago. The Satra ad Naamghars set up by Shankarcharya one the spirit of socialism and democracy which preached the belief to the law of incarnation in Indian philosophy.

Assam, a land of unique diversity, is renowned for its blend of indigenous and Sanskrit Brahmanic traditions, particularly through the Neo-Vaishnavism movement spearheaded by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. This movement brought about significant socio-cultural changes, emphasizing complete surrender to God for salvation.

Satras and Namghars stand as the cornerstone of Assam's religious and cultural landscape, embodying the essence of neo-Vaishnavism. Satras, led by a Guru (Satradhikar) and his initiated disciples, serve as hubs of learning and Vaisnava tradition. On the other hand, Namghars act as religious congregations, bringing together various local communities for prayers and spiritual gatherings.

Emerging as part of the pan-Indian Bhakti movement, neo-Vaishnavism flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries under Srimanta Sankardeva's leadership. Rejecting orthodox Hindu practices, Sankardeva promoted salvation through faith, prayer, and devotion to Krishna, aiming for an egalitarian society amidst ethnic tensions.

The core of Sankardeva's teachings was eka-sharana-naam-dharma, emphasizing devotion, prayers, devotees' equality, and the teacher's guidance. Satras and Namghars played a crucial role in spreading this ideology, serving as centers of religious activities and fostering social integration and harmony.

Through prayers, religious discourses, and cultural programs like Bhaonas and Ras Leelas, Satras and Namghars enriched the community's cultural life, transcending barriers of caste and tribe. These institutions continue to uphold the legacy of neo-Vaishnavism, preserving ancient religious philosophies and artistic expressions for generations to come.
