Lemmings are small rodents that spend the winter in the Arctic snowpack, tunneling through the snow to get around. This study aimed to understand the impact of snow hardness on lemming locomotion. We found that harder snow negatively affected the lemmings' digging speed and increased their effort to dig through the snow.
