I recently rejected a candidate based on a very simple question: "What do you understand by 'Temperature' in an LLM?".

His response was immediate: "Temperature decides the randomness of the output.". While this is technically the effect, it is not the answer I accept from an AI professional. This is the definition you learn in a 5-minute YouTube tutorial, not the definition used by an engineer who understands the underlying math of the model.



The Interview Reality Check In a technical round, I am not looking for surface-level definitions. I am testing your depth. If you cannot explain what is happening to the probability distribution or the logits behind the scenes, you are signaling that you only know how to use the API, not how to engineer it.

The Challenge I gave him a second chance, and he repeated the same answer. Now, I am asking you: If I asked you this in an interview, what would you tell me?.
