Tiny Robots Travel Through the Human Eye to Deliver Medicine

Scientists have developed ultra-small robots that can move through the dense tissue of the human eye to deliver drugs with extreme precision. These new nanorobots, created by an international team including researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, are only 500 nanometers wide—around 200 times thinner than a human hair.

The eye is filled with a thick, gel-like material called the vitreous, which has a tight network of proteins. This makes it very difficult for medicine to reach deeper areas. To overcome this, the researchers designed propeller-shaped nanorobots with a special slippery coating inspired by the carnivorous pitcher plant. This coating works like Teflon, helping the tiny robots slide through the sticky tissue without getting trapped or causing damage.

The nanorobots also contain magnetic material, allowing doctors to steer them using magnetic fields. This level of control could one day allow medicine to be delivered directly to specific cells or damaged areas inside the eye.

This breakthrough could transform how we treat eye diseases. Instead of painful injections or high drug doses, doctors could use swarms of these tiny robots to deliver medicine safely, accurately, and with fewer side effects.
