In 2003, a man named Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote a play where Archie Andrews came out as gay. He got a cease-and-desist order from Archie Comics threatening litigation if he portrayed Archie as gay. In 2014, Roberto became the CCO of Archie Comics, and in 2016, he created a show called Riverdale. The rest is history...but it's probably one you haven't heard before.
