Скачать или смотреть A Drive Up Lands End Road: US 50 to Forest Service Road 100 to Lands End Observatory

We love driving to Lands End Observatory. It's a beautiful drive from Grand Junction, CO up to the edge of Grand Mesa. Normally we drive US 50 south out of Grand Junction to Delta, CO. There we take CR 92 east to CR 65 north. We go up the south side of Grand Mesa on a nice, but windy, paved road. Once you are up on the Mesa you go a couple of miles past the Visitor Center to Forest Service Road 100 and turn right. It's a 12 miles road, the first half is unpaved and goes through some beautiful stands of trees and fields of wildflowers. The second have is paved albeit very rough with lots of potholes. Eventually you wind up at Lands End Observatory. It's a nice drive. But this year, we decided to try something different...drive up the west side of Grand Mesa on an unpaved, windy, no guard rails road that offers breathtaking views of The Grand Valley.

The road was rough, a little wash boarding, lots of switchbacks and at times narrow. After you turn off US 50 it's 6 miles to where the unpaved section starts. Then it's 12 miles of the aforementioned unpaved road with over 5,000 feet of elevation gain. Our RAV4 had no trouble driving the road. As a matter of fact, the only other car we saw on the road was a Toyota Prius coming down from the top. We did also encounter and woman either trying to run or walk to the top. Nancy asked if she was okay as we went past and she said she was.

Now, watching a video looking out the front window of a car can be pretty boring, and it took a little less than 45 minutes to get to the top. So I sped-up the video in places to move things along. I also added so music that, hopefully, will keep you awake. Enjoy!
