On July 20, 1976, at 8:12 a.m. EDT, NASA received the signal that Viking 1 successfully landed on the Martian surface. Viking 1 and Viking 2 collected high-resolution imagery and scientific data that continues to contribute to NASA’s goal of landing humans on Mars.

John Newcomb, who served on the Viking management team, will discuss the project’s evolution and contributions to the community, including many of the management principles and early technology developments that contributed to Viking’s success.

Following the discussion, a few of Newcomb's former colleagues will participate in a panel discussion where they will talk about their first-hand experiences and discoveries during the Viking project.

Panel members include:
Norman Crabill, Viking mission design manager
Gus Guastaferro, Viking deputy project manager
Paul Siemers, Viking lander aerothermodynamics engineer
Joel Levine, former NASA Langley scientist
