The Regulation (EU) 2024/1083, also known as the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), establishes a unified framework for media services within the internal market of the European Union. Its primary objective is to safeguard media independence and pluralism, recognising their crucial role in democratic processes and the formation of public opinion. The EMFA introduces common standards for media service providers, addressing issues such as editorial freedom, protection of journalistic sources, and transparency in media ownership. Furthermore, it outlines measures for the independent functioning of public service media providers and establishes the European Board for Media Services to promote regulatory cooperation and consistent application of media laws across Member States. The regulation also addresses challenges posed by digital platforms and aims to ensure fair allocation of economic resources, including state advertising, within the media sector.
