A series of paintings showing Maharajas wearing various robes decorates the Sanctum at Samadhi Temple, Pune. There are numerous temples of Sankar Maharaj throughout Maharashtra, particularly the Pune region, but one in Dhankawadi is the primary temple of Sankar Maharaj, who took Samadhi. He had wanted to do Samadhi 17 years ago, but delayed it on request from Dr. Dhaneshwar from Pune.

Sankar Maharaj wanted his sons to transcend his physical appearance, demeanour, attitudes, discourses, and concentrate on his Oneness with His Guru and the Lord. One day, in early April in Nineteen Forty-Seven, Sankar Maharaj told Sankar Maharaj's disciples he wanted to visit Maa Padmavati's temple at Pune. The best part is, Shankar Maharaj has time and again brought up the physical body of Shankar Maharaj and met with several of his disciples.

There are numerous instances reported from Yogiraj Sri Sankar Maharaj's devotees and disciples that He has appeared to his devotees in His own form or through others bodies during times of crises. On the appointed day for the samadhi of Sankar Maharaj, Lord Sankar left Sankar Maharaj's body. The puzzling part is, that Maharaj left the Samadhi at those places, and appeared as Shankar Maharaj in Maharashtra in body.

Sometime after 1878 (the year of Sri Swamy Samarth's samadhi), Maharaj returned to Maharashtra. On his return to Maharashtra, Maharaj came to the Shubharai Math at Solapur, Solapur, and stayed there with Janardhanbuva, one of Maharajs most prominent disciples and head of the math. Dr. Dhaneshwar is the only one of the disciples of Maharaj for whom the full biographical information is available, written by Dr. Dhaneshwar.

Due to Shankar Maharajs popularity, a lot of foreign devotees used to visit him to seek his counsel, such as those from Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, etc. Sankar Maharaj was never educated at any school nor was he exposed to any foreign languages, but he used to be able to converse in the native languages of devotees with great fluency. George Harrison went on to help promote Shankar and use Indian instruments in popular music during the 60s. The Sitar and Orchestra Concerto was performed with Andre Previn conducting, with Shankar playing sitar.
