Hi, I'm Debbie Catz. I'm a certified clinical hypnotherapist here in the San Francisco Bay area. I have a masters degree in social work. To learn more about this you can visit my website at www.norcalhypno.com. And now I'm going to help you understand the simplicity of hypnosis. Well it can be semantics because in hypnotherapy we're using hypnosis but in some states there are rules about what a person can call themselves or say what they do but if a person is not an advanced therapist with an advanced degree and a license then sometimes they're not allowed to use the word therapist so they would have to call themselves a hypnotist but basically hypnotherapy and hypnosis is one and the same. There are two types of hypnotherapy or hypnosis and they are analytical and suggestion or suggestive. Suggestion or suggestive hypnosis is where a trained hypnotist or hypnotherapist gets the person into a deeply relaxed state which is what hypnosis really is. So the conscious mind which is ten percent of our brain is quieted down and the subconscious mind which is ninety percent of our brain is opened up. So subconscious mind being like the hard drive of a computer, it can be reprogrammed with new thoughts, new belief systems, new suggestions. And there's also direct and indirect suggestions which a hypnotist might use, they might not use a direct one like maybe about smoking, if you're trying to quit smoking. They might use like a story or a metaphor. But there's a number of different ways to use suggestive hypnosis. And the other one is analytical which really is more like hypnotherapy and done by a more trained, advanced hypnotherapist. And analytical is where we're going into the subconscious mind accessing memory and quite often addressing events that have happened in a person's life that have caused trauma. And usually it requires more sessions and sessions are deeper and sometimes are longer. So really hypnotherapy is a loosely used term and it uses hypnosis so it can one in the same or it can be used, it can be defined differently depending on what state the person is in. But it is always important if you're going to have hypnotherapy.
