Alfred Rudolph Waud, born in London in 1828, wasn't your typical battlefield artist. Waud's artistic journey began in his native England, where he honed his skills at the prestigious Government School of Design. In 1850, he crossed the Atlantic, seeking new opportunities in the burgeoning American art scene. He found his niche as an illustrator for newspapers like the New York Illustrated News, his talent for depicting ships and nautical scenes earning him recognition.

But it was the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 that truly ignited Waud's artistic fire. Joining Harper's Weekly as a "special artist," he embedded himself with the Union Army of the Potomac.
