Hurricane Melissa was the 13th and final named storm, 5th hurricane, 4th major, 3rd category 5 hurricane and the strongest storm of the 2025 Season, and the strongest storm globally in 2025. Melissa's life began in the Main Development Region, steadily organizing before forming in the Caribbean. After taking a little time to wrap itself together, it began a period of rapid intensification, going from 70mph to 140mph in 24 hours. After another 12 hours, it began another period of rapid intensification, going from 145mph to 175mph.
On the 28th, Melissa continued intensifying, reaching its peak intensity of 185mph 892mbar at 14Z, tying it with 1935's Labor Day Hurricane. 3 hours later, Melissa tied the Labor Day hurricane again, this time for the strongest landfall ever recorded in the Atlantic, and Melissa surpassed Gilbert for the strongest landfall in Jamaica by 50mph. Melissa quickly weakened to category 4 2 hours later, and was down to category 3 status by 00Z. A brief restrengthening into a category 4 for 3 hours occurred, before Melissa weakened back to high-end category 3 status. Melissa made a low-end category 3 landfall on Cuba on the 29th at 11:10Z. It then weakened to category 1 status before making 2 more landfalls on the eastern Bahamas. Melissa strengthened again to category 2 status for about 18 hours before weakening back to category 1 status and becoming extratropical.
