Sir Keir Starmer will hold talks in Italy on how Britain can emulate its successful crackdown on illegal mig­ration after eight people died in the Channel on Sunday.

The prime minister is facing mounting concern from within the Labour Party over his strategy to “smash the gangs” as Sunday’s loss of life in the Channel took the death toll this year to nearly four times that of last year.

He appointed a former police chief as his new border security commander, who will oversee his strategy on Channel migrants and deliver on his pledge to “smash the gangs”. Downing Street said the appointment of Martin Hewitt, who led Britain’s enforcement of Covid lockdown laws as chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, marked “a new approach to securing our borders”.
