A massive police operation is underway after at least six people were killed and more than 80 were injured in a bomb attack on one of Istanbul's busiest streets.

Ambulances and police rushed to the scene on Istiklal Avenue - a popular high street and tourist destination right in the heart of the city.

The bomb was allegedly left under a bench and timed to explode when the street hit its peak time.

Shoppers who had been enjoying a stroll in the afternoon sun were suddenly running in fear and trying to seek cover in shops as the plume of smoke billowed overheard.
