The 49-year-old Hans Island dispute between allies Canada and Denmark came to an end in June 2022 due to an agreement reached between the two countries.
The demarcation agreement between Canada and Denmark was signed in 1973. However, it has not been decided who owns the small island of Hans, which covers an area of just 1.3 square kilometers between the two countries. There are no mineral resources on that rocky island. Also, no one lives there. However, the island was claimed by both countries. In 1984, a Danish minister carried his national flag and a bottle of wine with the words "Welcome to the Island of Denmark". In return, the natives hoisted the Canadian flag and the bottle of Canadian wine. As a result, flags and bottles of wine from both countries were hoisted on the island of Hans.
Because of this, the border issue between Canada and Denmark was widely referred to as the ‘Whiskey War’. In this context, the agreement to divide Hans Island between them was signed on Tuesday between the two countries. With this, the border issue that has been going on for 49 years has come to an end.
