My pal Stephanie Coleman joins me on the fiddle for this rare Old-time banjo & fiddle piece from the Hicks family of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau. It's a track on my new album "While You Were Slumbering" out on Sleepy Cat Records. I learned it from a field recording fragment of the superb banjo playing of Dee Hicks, the Fentress County, Tennessee ballad singer who sang around 400 songs. He learned it from his father Daniel (1868-1948). I didn't have a name for it when I first learned it and thought “Clear Fork,” the name of the creek that the Hicks family settled near around 1817, might serve the purpose for a piece that moves so swimmingly. Creek gorges on the Cumberland Plateau are special places —sandstone bluffs, rushing water, and big leaf magnolias, rhododendron, and hemlocks. I've come to learn that the family called it "Daniel Hicks's Lost Indian," which makes sense given its resemblance to other fiddle/banjo pieces linked to that title. Banjo: eCGCD Fiddle: Calico
