This is the second aircraft museum of it's kind after Visakhapatnam. This museum exhibits a decommissioned approx. 29 years old Russian made Tupolev TU-142 M anti-submarine strategic bomber plane operated by Indian Navy. This museum was built by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority a.k.a NKDA. It is a attraction near Kolkata Gate, New Town, Kolkata.
As mentioned earlier, this museum exhibits one Russian Made Tupolev TU-142 M long range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) strategic bomber plane. This aircraft was designed by Tupolev Design Bureau and built by Kuibyshev Aviation Plant, Russia. NATO named it BEAR.
This maritime patrol aircraft is operated by a crew of 11 men. It can be used for anti-submarine warfare, anti-shipping, reconnaissance, electronic intelligence, search and rescue, and other roles. This maritime patrol aircraft is powered by four NK-12MV turboprop engines, developing 15 000 hp each and fitted with counter-rotating propellers. The Tu-142 has an impressive range of 11 500 km. This aircraft carries 83.9 t of onboard fuel. Furthermore it is fitted with in-flight refueling probe, which might further extend its range. Still though this maritime patrol aircraft could reach US shores without in-flight refueling. The Tu-142s are well equipped to trail submarines and have tracked US submarines in the 1970s. Tu-142M (an updated version) Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft, was inducted into the Indian Navy at Dabolim, Goa from erstwhile USSR in 1988. On March 30, 1988, the first three Tu-142Ms (Albatross) arrived at INS Hansa, Goa, after a flight from Simferopol (Gvardeyskoye Air Base). According to source, the aircraft subsequently shifted base permanently to INS Rajali in 1992, keeping in mind India’s Look East policy and became the most formidable LRMR ASW (Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare) aircraft of the Indian Navy. It became the navy’s mainstay for such operations for close to three decades. INAS 312 has the unique distinction of operating the Tu-142M, which is the world’s heaviest, fastest and highest flying turboprop aircraft.
In May, 1987, 40 pilots, observers, 16 technical officers and 128 sailors were deputed to Riga for training for operating the Tu-142M. The aircraft has had a distinguished service with more than 30,000 hours of accident free flying with the Indian Navy. It has undergone several modifications to keep it updated with the evolving technology and changing requirements of the Indian Navy.
The aircraft has participated in major Indian naval exercises and operations. It saw action during Operation Cactus in Maldives. It has participated in operational missions off Sri Lanka to provide airborne surveillance. It has also rendered its service in Op Vijay in 1998, Op Parakram in 2002 and anti-piracy operations from 2011 onwards. The aircraft is roughly 49.5m in overall length, 12.12m high and has wing span of approximately 50m. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 185,000kg. he aircraft is armed with a variety of defensive weapons such as Kh-35 anti-ship missile, self-guided missiles, twin AM-23 automatic cannon, depth charges and torpedoes. The aircraft is also fitted with a Strela onboard communication system, a NPK-142M navigation system, a Sayany onboard defence system and a Nerchinsk hydrological defence system. The sonobuoys incorporated in the aircraft include RGB-15, RGB-25 and RGB-55A. The Tu-142M anti-submarine aircraft is powered by four NK-12M turboprop engines designed by the Kuznetsov Design Bureau. Each engine develops a power output of 15,000shp. The propulsion system also consists of four coaxial eight-bladed reversible-pitch propellers. The aircraft has a fuel capacity of 87,000kg.
I recommend my followers and people of Kolkata to visit this museum. That was an amazing experience.
