Roger Quilter: Study Op.4/1 for piano

This study is the first of a set of three. John York, the editor of the edition I used ('The Boosey and Hawkes 20th Century Piano Collection 1900-1945, 1997) says of these studies:

'Although Quilter is known almost exclusively as a song composer, he also wrote a small number of piano compositions. In these studies he provides ample scope for developing hand extension (be careful to avoid straining) and for bringing out subtle and attractive inner melodies. In the first study, the middle episode can be taken at a slightly slower tempo...'

This has long been a favourite of mine and I am pleased to have finally got round to recording it. My tempo is not the fastest the piece will tolerate (though it is about crochet = 184, the composer's tempo marking) but that does allow the song-like character to come through clearly.

I would think the music is also available on imslp (I haven't checked).
