Is the Jim Beam Extra Age a good whiskey? Let's find out!

This is the Jim Beam Extra Age, sometimes called the Jim Beam Black Label, the Jim Beam Extra Age or the Jim Beam Black Extra Age. It's essentially the premium version of the Jim Beam White Label with which we should all be familiar.

It comes in at 43% ABV, and has a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12 malted Barley. It's a non-age-statement bourbon, and although it did have an 8 year age statement in previous years, but now we don't know how old is the Jim Beam Black Label, as the term 'extra aged' doesn't really mean anything... At the end of the day though, what matters is how it tastes!

Jim Beam Black Extra Age Tasting Notes:

Nose:
Very sweet up front with caramel, vanilla, powdered sugar and some oak spice coming through. After sitting with it a little bit, I got some peanut notes, reminding me of peanut brittle, and a light touch of ethanol.

Palate:
Much more oak char comes through on the palate. The sweetness and peanut notes are still there, but there's much more oak spice. there's not much of a mouthfeel, with the bourbon being quite light. On the second sip, I got a touch of a savoury note, like a salted caramel.

Finish:
The sweetness fades quite quickly, leaving the oak spice and peanut notes lingering on. The spice is quite light, and turns slightly herbal towards the end of the palate, as I took a few breaths.

Ultimately, it's a fine whiskey, it's inexpensive, there's nothing really wrong with it and I can see why a lot of people might consider it one of their top budget bourbons. That said, there's also nothing really exceptional about it that makes it stand out from some other budget friendly bourbons I keep on my shelves. It's handy in a cocktail though, as it does deliver a solid bourbon profile without being so spicy it dominates the drink.
