Death in the Gulf Stream - An Ernest Hemingway Original Cocktail with Genever, Lime & Bitters

Описание к видео Death in the Gulf Stream - An Ernest Hemingway Original Cocktail with Genever, Lime & Bitters

Much like the Hemingway Daiquiri (aka Hemingway Special), this drink is very tart and foreign to our modern palettes, but that's part of the appeal. Genever is an exciting spirit and one that getting a much deserved revival. It was a common cocktail ingredient in the early 20th century. It's a great spirit to add to your arsenal and is used in some great cocktails. The Death in the Gulf Stream is a good place to start. It's a highball, so it's easy to make and uses few ingredients.

The legend behind this cocktail was that Hemingway and, culinary author, Charles H. Baker (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1586...) survived a tumultuous fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. Hemingway having contributed a drink recipe to Baker's last book called, Death in the Afternoon (that was a combination of absinthe and champagne), concocted this drink for his new book and named it, Death in the Gulf Stream, after their deadly experience in the Gulf. It makes for a good story, so why ruin it by questioning it's validity?

A lot of recipes will include sugar, a teaspoon or 1/4 ounce of simple syrup, to help take the edge off and make it closer to a daiquiri or something that our modern palettes are more familiar with. It's all up to you and what you can enjoy, but try it first without sugar. It's the way Hemingway would've wanted it. ¡Salud!
