In this video we'll explore 7 of the most important skin signs to look for in CKD (Chronic kidney disease). These same signs and symptoms can also appear later when people have kidney failure or their kidneys stop working. As a family doctor in the UK I often see patients with mild CKD on a regular basis and for most people it is well controlled if they monitor things closely. One of the biggest misconceptions is that just because something is chronic it means it is 'deadly' or very dangerous. Most people will have some form of kidney impairment by the time they are in their 80s.
Here are the 7 skin signs to look out for:

1) Dry skin in CKD/chronic kidney disease
This can be down to dehydration as the kidneys are not able to do their job as well as before

2) Ankle/foot/leg oedema or swelling
this is seen in kidney disease as the kidneys play a key role in fluid balance and fluid retention can occur if they do not work well.

3) Itchy skin in kidney failure
As the kidneys start to fail and not filter out all the toxins- these can build up in our body and this can irritate our skin, causing an itch. often there is no distinct rash.

4) Color changes in skin due to CKD/Kidney failure
Some people with later stages of CKD can become anaemic - which means they have low red blood cell count which can make us look pale.
Other times people can get a hyperpigmented darker tone to the skin as CKD progresses to later stages and kidney failure. This is often seen in patients who are having dialysis.

5) Nail changes in CKD/Kidney failure
This is called “half-and-half” nails - also known as Linsay nails. And as well as seen in multiple other conditions, if can also be seen in people with kidney problems.

6) Muscle cramps in chronic kidney disease
Often when there is an imbalance of electrolytes then we can see muscles not work well and this can cause cramping which can be seen on the skin.

7) Calcium deposits - in CKD
-when the kidneys fail in their job at taking out certain things, then calcium deposits can form in the body including the joints.
