OUR FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (August 11, 2024)

We are on the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time; in today’s gospel, we would hear the Jews murmuring about Jesus. How can he be the bread that came down from heaven.

So, they asked amongst themselves, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother?” To address this, Jesus reminds them of what is written in the prophets—that all shall be taught by God, and all who learned from God would come to him. Those who believe has eternal life.

He also explains to them that while the hunger of their ancestors in the desert was satisfied by the manna, the mysterious bread from heaven, they still died. But those who would eat of the living bread will live forever. This bread, brothers and sisters, is Jesus’s flesh, which as revealed later on, was freely given and sacrificed on the cross “for the life of the world.”

We are on a journey from one place to another but to the father. Do we take seriously our journey to the eternal life with the father? Jesus is the food for that journey. Will we come to Jesus in faith and eat his flesh?
