In this video, the craftsman shares with us the process of securing mortise and tenon joints using wooden wedges. The craftsman uses the through mortise and tenon technique, where the horizontal beams are connected to the vertical posts through drilled holes (female mortises) and the ends of the wooden pieces are trimmed to fit (male mortises). The special feature here is that the male mortise is made longer than the thickness of the post to expose the joint. The role of the wedge: Instead of using nails or glue, the craftsman uses a wedge-shaped piece of wood to lock the joint securely:
Mechanism: When the wedge is driven into the gap below or next to the mortise, it creates immense pressure, tightly pressing the mortise against the wall of the drilled hole.
Durability: This technique makes the structure extremely strong and prevents shaking over time.
Flexibility: If the wood shrinks after a period of use, the wedge can simply be driven deeper to tighten the joint.
