Why I stress about the sun | My Skin Cancer Story

In 2018 while pregnant and at the doctors for an ultrasound, my husband spots an odd looking mole on my back. A year later, I found out it was skin cancer.

Growing up, I always felt pressure to be tan, to go into tanning beds. I was even told the lie "spend 5 minutes every few days and you'll build a tan." Someone like me doesn't build a tan. As I got older, I ditched the tanning beds, but wasn't the best at applying AND reapplying sunscreen.

I was at work when I got the call from my dermatologist telling me I had superficial melanoma, which basically means that the cancer grows on the outer layer of the skin. I underwent Mohs surgery to cut it out.

But, I'm not in the clear. I can get skin cancer again.

I stress about protecting my skin as much as possible from sun exposure, especially since I have a little one who is now more likely to get skin cancer because of me.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. I hope by sharing my story and showing you my skin cancer picture, you will protect your skin and/or get checked out.
