Jerome, Arizona has a lengthy and rich history. For visitors wanting to learn a bit of the town's past, there's no better place to start off than the Jerome State Historic Park. Today we dropped by to explore what this old mansion could teach us. We saw some old mining equipment and paraphernalia, read about the Douglas family, caught a movie about the history of Jerome, viewed several dioramas detailing the layout of the mines underground as well as pieces of mined minerals and ore. Finally, we went to the Audrey Headframe Park where we gazed down into the remains of a 1900 ft mining shaft.

Jerome State Historic Park opened to the public in October 1965. Prior to becoming Arizona's fifth state park, it was a mansion that belonged to the Douglas family - a family with a long history of mining. Built in 1916, the mansion served as a home for the family as well as housing important mining officials and investors. Several rooms in the old mansion remain untouched and preserved as they once did.

It is easy to spend hours pouring over all the details inside the present-day mansion. The building is packed with old panoramic photos of Jerome and the Douglas family. Photos of Jerome firefighters through the years adorn hallways as well as uniforms once worn. Vintage glass bottles stand in a case near a 1950s carbonator from a nearby hotel's soda fountain. From dentist equipment to mailroom and assay office artifacts, one will have plenty to take in.

Outside of the mansion, one can take in sweeping views of the Jerome hillside, otherwise known as Cleopatra Hill. To the north one can see the red landscape of Sedona, the San Francisco Peaks, and Humprey's Peak. Incredible views are not in short supply at the museum's grounds.

Surrounding the mansion stands rusty ore cards and other displays detailing mining operations as well as pointing out other buildings in the hillsides along with their history. From the grounds, one can get a good look at the nearby mine shafts.

Numerous mining shafts were constructed in search of rich copper deposits. The Daisy shaft was first constructed, followed by the Edith and finally the Audrey. The trio was considered one of the safest and produced millions of tons of copper, silver, and gold ore.

The museum is a great learning experience. We felt like we could have easily spent a day here reading every little bit of information and looking at all the photographs. For anyone passing through, expect to spend a couple hours. The park is a great opportunity to truly get a glimpse into what life through the ages of this small mining town was like.
