Softball Catcher Drills: Setup

To properly receive the ball from the pitcher, you will need to get into the right stance behind the plate.

“A catcher’s role is to receive the ball. Therefore, a catcher needs to have a good setup,” junior national team gold medal-winning softball coach Pam Newton says.

The proper setup starts with your feet square to the pitcher, keeping your glove in a relaxed position and maintaining flexion in your ankles, knees and hips. This position can allow you to give the sign and location to the pitcher.
