For today's tasting I am on the look out for a characterful example of the Nero d'Avola grape variety and alight upon Cusumano's excellent Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2020. A lovely straight-forward red, full of Sicilian character.

Cusumano are a family-owned Sicilan wine producer, best known for varietal wines made from Nero d'Avola. Founded in 2001 by brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano. They took over the family business from their father, Francesco, with the goal of producing high-quality Sicilian wines.
They have two flagship wines Sàgana, (100% Nero d'Avola) and Noa, ( Nero d'Avola with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon).

They also make a range of 'cru' wines from varieties such as Pinot Nero, Chardonnay and Moscato. There is also a more value-led range made up of varietal wines from Nero d'Avola, Merlot, Syrah, and Insolia. Most wines are classified as Sicilia IGT, or Terre Siciliane IGT.

Over 500 hectares of vineyards are farmed by the company, spread across seven sites in four different regions of the island. This creates a wide range of mesoclimates and soil types to work with, in order to optimise the growing conditions for each variety and achieve complexity in multi-site blends.
