It seems that the Salamanders are not so generous with their drops as they used to be! They definitely still drop volatile glands, but now it's much more rare than it was previously.

On this video all server settings are on default so you can see exactly how often and how many drop. Also it seems that you get the same drop whether you are using a decent tool or a basic one, so it's probably best to use a stone pick!

You can even harvest with the Sickle, I got 8 glands from one drop using a start metal sickle, but then on my next drop only one... so it still seems pretty random. With the sickle you don't get anything else though. If a gland is gonna drop you get it otherwise you get nothing. But, I did get 8 on a sickle... and I've not seen that many drop using any other harvesting tool for a long time!!! So the sickle is definitely worth a shot.
