Now, let's talk about the guaranteed portion of TIAA Traditional. I'll walk you through a hypothetical to simplify this complex topic. Currently, TIAA Traditional's liquid account rate is around 6.25% for new deposits. The guaranteed component, let's assume, is 3%. If you deposit $20,000 today, you're earning 6.25%, with the additional amount being 3.25%.

Here's where it gets interesting. TIAA reviews and possibly adjusts this rate monthly for new deposits. Fast forward to March 2024. The board convenes, deciding whether to maintain, raise, or lower the additional amount for the $20,000 deposit made in December 2023.

Now, here's a crucial point: TIAA is conservative in its approach. They're not eager to decrease that additional amount due to the logistical challenges of adjusting existing contracts. It's a headache they want to avoid.

Consider this: If TIAA hypothetically lowered the additional amount from 3.25% to 3%, your effective rate would still be 6%. TIAA has a robust financial position, and they aren't in the business of lowering rates frequently. While historical data on these adjustments is hard to find, I can share from my extensive experience that decreases are uncommon.

Additionally, if an adjustment were to happen, TIAA often prioritizes adjusting historical buckets before affecting the most recent deposits. This, again, emphasizes their commitment to stability and customer satisfaction.
