President Donald Trump urged U.S. cattle ranchers to lower beef prices for consumers, even as they profit from import tariffs.

Trump said tariffs — including a 50% tariff on Brazilian cattle — helped U.S. ranchers succeed “for the first time in decades.”

He warned that high beef prices hurt American consumers, saying “the consumer is a huge factor in my thinking.”

Earlier in the week, Trump said he might import Argentine beef to reduce record-high prices, angering U.S. ranchers.

U.S. beef and cattle prices have surged due to drought and high feed costs, leading ranchers to reduce herd sizes.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the USDA will announce a plan to revitalize the U.S. beef herd.

Eight Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. Julie Fedorchak, asked Trump for transparency regarding any plans to import beef.

Economists said there’s no quick fix since raising cattle takes about two years; lowering prices won’t boost supply.

Trump’s tariffs on Brazilian imports this summer cut U.S. beef supply, raising costs for importers and retailers.

Following Trump’s comments, U.S. feeder cattle futures dropped sharply, hitting their daily limit decline of 9.25 cents to 361.025 cents per pound.
