Born on October 15, 1942, in Peshawar, Imtiaz Khan, the elder son of the renowned actor 'Jayant,' embarked on a journey through the world of entertainment that left an indelible mark.
Imtiaz Khan's tryst with the silver screen began at an early age when he graced the celluloid as a child artist in the film 'Nazneen' in 1951. His youthful performances continued with several films, including 'Watan,' solidifying his connection to the world of cinema. However, it was not just the allure of the big screen that captured Imtiaz's heart; the stage was equally enchanting to him. From his college days, he was involved in theater and later wrote and directed numerous plays, demonstrating his multifaceted talent.
The Khan brothers, Imtiaz and Amjad Khan, shared a deep passion for the stage. Their English play 'Loot' became a sensation of its time, showcasing their penchant for theatrical excellence. Imtiaz Khan, in particular, harbored a directorial dream right from the beginning.
A pivotal moment in Imtiaz Khan's career came when he joined the legendary director 'K Asif' as an assistant director for the film 'Love and God.' Unfortunately, the film remained incomplete following the tragic deaths of both the film's hero, 'Gurudutt,' and 'K Asif.' This marked the beginning of a challenging phase for Imtiaz, prompting him to assist 'Chetan Anand' in films like 'Heer Ranjha' and 'Hanste Zakham.'
However, fate had something remarkable in store. The Ramsay Brothers extended an offer that would forever alter Imtiaz Khan's destiny. He was cast as the antagonist in 'Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche,' a decision that would prove momentous. The film struck gold at the box office, propelling Imtiaz Khan to overnight stardom.
Throughout the 1970s, Imtiaz Khan's imposing presence graced many superhit films like 'Yaadon Ki Baaraat,' 'Dharmatma,' 'Zakhmee',' 'Zoro,' 'Kala Sona,' 'Kabeela,' 'Pratiggya,' and 'Darwaza,' where he masterfully portrayed negative roles. His career was on a meteoric rise.
However, fame often carries its own complexities. Imtiaz Khan's close association with actress Reena Roy led to media scrutiny and controversy, causing her to distance herself from him. This unexpected setback halted his career's upward trajectory.
In response, Imtiaz Khan turned his attention back to directing. Although the film 'Pyaara Dost' in 1982 provided a glimmer of hope, his subsequent directorial endeavors faced unfortunate closures, leaving a sense of unfulfilled potential.
Imtiaz Khan's cinematic journey may not have been as enduring as his brother Amjad Khan's, but it was undoubtedly marked by passion, resilience, and a thirst for creativity. He often lamented that he was more recognized for his family name than his own body of work.
In his personal life, Imtiaz Khan experienced the highs and lows of relationships. His first marriage to 'Roshni,' a junior artist in films, ended in divorce. He later found companionship in the talented actress 'Kritika Desai,' and together they raised a daughter named 'Ayesha Khan,' reportedly their adopted child, as they had no biological children of their own.
On March 15, 2020, Imtiaz and Kritika hosted a gathering at their home, surrounded by friends and guests. Tragically, Imtiaz's health took a sudden downturn, with plummeting blood pressure. Apologizing to the attendees, he retired to his room, where, after the festivities had concluded, he took his last breaths. With 'Kritika' by his side, Imtiaz Khan whispered, "Now I will go. I am staying," marking the end of a remarkable journey in the world of Indian cinema and leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate.
