10 James Monroe Facts

Описание к видео 10 James Monroe Facts

Here are ten quick facts about James Monroe, the last of the Founding Fathers to become United States President. Though he was the most forgotten of the five original presidents Monroe was no less involved in America's origins. From his service in the Revolutionary War under General Washington, to the ratification debates, to serving as Secretary of State under James Madison to ultimately becoming the fifth president and winning two elections Monroe's whole life was dedicated to the nation.

Like Madison and Jefferson, Monroe was Democratic-Republican. He was very supportive of the French Revolution and actually witnessed the coronation of Napoleon while serving as diplomat for the U.S. to the United Kingdom. However, his experience in the War of 1812 led him to take on some Federalist values of a stronger central government.

Monroe was an incredibly popular president in his time. His two term presidency was known as the Era of Good Feelings. In the election of 1820 he even went uncontested for the presidency. But the end of his presidency marked the end of an era. Without the Founding Fathers the nation would be divided more and more bitterly in the following decades.
