One to one correspondence is all about matching an object to the correct corresponding number. It involves the ability to recognize that numbers are symbols to represent quantity. One to one correspondence is a critical skill to learn early in life. It allows us to live our lives with awareness of the objects around us and their quantities. Simple skills like counting beads and counting money, to more complicated skills like cooking and baking involve one to one correspondence.

It is important that children develop the ability to count with correspondence. It differs from rote counting as it rote counting demonstrates understanding sequence and involves a child’s memory. One to one correspondence involves coordination of the actual counting with the quantities and numbers that should correctly correspond.

Use fun and colorful objects to demonstrate correspondence. Beads, food, toys and other common objects can be utilized during the learning process. Avoid worksheets. Make it tangible and tactile for your children. One to one correspondence can be fun for children!
