FIRST OF ALL WHAT IS MOOT COURT? Moot court is a simulated courtroom experience where law students argue fictional cases in front of real judges, honing their advocacy, research, and public speaking skills. Think of it as the ultimate legal showdown—part debate, part theater—preparing future lawyers for the real thing! ⚖️✨

Hey everyone, welcome to my breakdown of the 2024 Ames Moot Court Final Round, which went down on November 19 inside the iconic Ames Courtroom at Harvard Law School! I was blown away by the powerhouse judging panel: Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson ’96, former Chief Judge Patti B. Saris ’76 (who also teaches at Harvard), and Sixth Circuit Judge Joan L. Larsen.

The made-up case this year? *Daniel Welles, U.S. Attorney General v. John Doe*—and trust me, it’s a total firecracker:

John Doe is an undocumented resident living in Ames City with deep roots—family, community service, the works. He wants to legally own a gun for personal protection because his neighborhood isn’t the safest. The catch? 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(5)(A) flat-out bans anyone unlawfully in the U.S. from having firearms. Doe fires back, claiming this stomps all over his Second Amendment rights.

The trial court sided with the feds, leaning on older circuit rulings that say undocumented folks aren’t covered by the Second Amendment. But the appellate court flipped the script, applying the Supreme Court’s Bruen framework, and ruled that Doe’s strong connections make him one of “the people” under the Constitution—plus, there’s no solid historical precedent for stripping gun rights just because of immigration status.

The (fictional) Supreme Court steps in to settle two massive questions:
1. Does someone unlawfully in the U.S. but with serious ties to the country count as part of “the people” who get Second Amendment protection?
2. Can the government still disarm that person without violating the historical meaning of the Second Amendment?

I’ll walk you through the best arguments, the toughest bench questions, and my own hot takes on where this could go in real life. Drop a like if you’re team Doe or team AG, and let me know in the comments which side convinced you! ⚖️🔥 #AmesMootCourt2024 #HarvardLaw #SecondAmendment
