FINE PAIR OF GEORGIAN SILVER CANDLESTICKS - EARL C | A very fine and important pair of Georgian sterling silver candlestick engraved as a presentation gift from an English Earl. Tall candlesticks of classical design. Removable cup and drip tray with clear hallmarks for Birmingham 1808. Beaded patterning around the rim. The main stem of classic colonnade form with beaded rings. Large beaded foot to match the cups, again with clear matching hallmarks for 1808, Makers cartouche of "MB" (Matthew Boulton). Minor crease to one and old repair to the other. Both are engraved "W.A.S. From Earl C (Coronet above a "C") 1st January 1883". The coronet is that of an Earl. The candlesticks were bought in London in 1946 by the owners father. Believed to have been owned by Alan Frederick Cathcart, 3rd Earl Cathcart and given to Walter Arthur Smith FSA as a New Years gift. The ranks of the English peerage are Duke (highest rank), Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron.
