England’s World Cup games could be shown on big screens outside Everton’s waterfront stadium this summer. On June 17, the Three Lions kick off their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA against Croatia.
Thomas Tuchel’s side – who strung together a perfect 10 victories in qualifying for the tournament – play Ghana six days later followed by a match-up with Panama on June 27 in a repeat of the 2018 clash. It has now been revealed how those fixtures could be shown live on the sprawling plaza outside Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The club has received permission from Liverpool Council to host outdoor events including gigs and Christmas markets in the space that envelopes its new home. It is thought around 13,000 people could gather for any future gigs.
The 52,769-capacity ground at Bramley-Moore Dock has already attracted the Rugby League Ashes Test Match in its inaugural season alongside staging The Toffees’ first home games away from Goodison Park in 133 years. A licensing hearing at Liverpool Town Hall has been told how the club’s founding partner and official beer provider Budweiser could look to put on events during the summer.
The American beer giant was named as one of the first brands to partner with the club in its move to Bramley-Moore Dock and provides fans with the various drinks in its stable on matchdays including Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois. The outdoor space also bears Budweiser’s name.
David Crank, licensing agent acting on behalf of Everton, told the hearing how the company would consider screening matches during the World Cup in the three open spaces around the stadium. An event management plan would be put in place should these go-ahead.
Given the late nature of the kick off times owing to the time difference between the UK and United States – England’s games will kick off at 9pm and 10pm – the committee was told how the club had sought terms to host six events with non-standard timings, allowing them to go beyond an 11pm curfew.
It was said it was unlikely there would be “an appetite” for any more than that. Suzie Parker, Everton’s head of events, said: “If we are to stage them, the Plaza would open from 5-5.30pm until an hour after the full time whistle, midnight-ish.”
The proposed screenings are the latest in a series of major international football events to be linked with Hill Dickinson Stadium. As well as being confirmed as a host venue for the UEFA EURO 2028 tournament, it was announced in November that Liverpool is one of 16 host cities named within a joint-bid by English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Hill Dickinson Stadium is one of 22 proposed UK stadia included in the bid to host what would be, with 48 teams taking part, the biggest single-sport event in the country’s history. FIFA is expected to announce the winning host nation in April.
