STORYLINE
Security was tight on Thursday in Panama City as it prepares to host the Summit of the Americas, with emotions running high over Cuba's first-ever presence at the regional gathering and recent US sanctions on top-level Venezuelan officials for human rights abuses.
A group of 25 mostly conservative former Spanish and Latin American presidents issued a declaration calling for the immediate release of Venezuelan opposition leaders it considers political prisoners and which the government accuses of trying to violently oust President Nicolas Maduro barely two years into his term.
Speaking at a news conference along with the wives of jailed opposition leaders Leopoldo Lopez and deposed Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar said that "silence or inaction are not alternatives, but accomplices," urging incumbent leaders to endorse the declaration.
The declaration comes as Venezuela has called on the US to withdraw its sanctions against the South American country for repressing anti-government protests last year.
