A few years ago, it looked very much like the future of guitar effects was in digital modeling. This is still partly true, but lately, digitally controlled analog effects have come to the forefront in a big way. Pedals like the Kismet overdrive from Minnesota's Ramble FX exemplify these hybrid technologies. The Kismet is an excellent, all-analog OD with a three-band EQ, and a digital microcontroller that allows for saving and switching between presets, either with the on-board footswitch, an expression pedal, or a MIDI controller. Being able to morph between gain and EQ extremes with an expression pedal offers endless creative possibilities, and the Kismet's dirt sounds are rich and deliciously gritty. This is the future of overdrive.
