The Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) is not a single building but a vast complex of altars and pavilions surrounded by an immense park. Built in the early 15th century by the same Yongle Emperor who commissioned the Forbidden City, it served as the sacred site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would perform annual ceremonies, praying to Heaven for good harvests for the nation. The entire design is a masterpiece of symbolism. The park's layout reflects ancient Chinese beliefs: the southern part is square, symbolizing the Earth, while the northern part is semi-circular, representing Heaven. It was here, at this UNESCO World Heritage site, that the emperor, as the "Son of Heaven," acted as the intermediary between the earthly and divine worlds.

The central and most recognizable point is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests—a magnificent, three-tiered, circular structure built entirely of wood without a single nail. You can find groups singing excerpts from Beijing opera and calligraphers using water-dipped brushes to write poetry on the stone pavement. It is an extraordinary contrast—ancient, sacred buildings surrounded by the joyful buzz of a modern, local community.
