Catherine de' Medici was an Italian noblewoman and queen of France. She was the wife of King Henry II of the Valois dynasty and the mother of three future kings, significantly impacting 16th-century France. Initially seen as an unremarkable foreigner, Catherine, an orphan, married into the French court at 14. Despite bringing a sizable dowry and expecting to bear many children, she discovered her husband was in love with an older woman, her dowry was unpaid, and she was unable to conceive. Nonetheless, through her intelligence and determination, she successfully maintained her marriage and became exceptionally adept at navigating the core of monarchy, ruling France for 50 years.
