How to Call a Marina on a Marine VHF Radio

Marinas sometimes monitor Channel 16, but you cannot be sure. Instead, they typically use designated working channels, which vary by location. To find the correct channel, check pilotage books, apps, websites, or posters and signs near the marina entrance.

1. Find the Marina’s VHF Channel
Common marina working channels include 09, 10, 11, 12, 17, 68, 69, 71, 72, and 77. Always verify the correct channel before calling.

2. Make the Call
Use clear and professional radio protocol.

Example Call:
"Marina Premia, Marina Premia, this is Sailing Yacht Ola, over."

If there is no response after 30 seconds, repeat the call.

Once the marina responds:
"Marina Premia, this is Sailing Yacht Ola, a 12-meter sailing yacht with a 2-meter draft. Requesting a berth for one night, over."

The marina will reply with docking instructions or ask for additional details.

3. Confirm and Acknowledge
Once you receive instructions, confirm them and close the communication properly.

Example:
"Understood, proceeding to berth 15. Thank you. Ola out."
