Social and Environmental Management Unit (SEMU):-

Punjab Irrigation Department (PID), Government of Punjab under Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) has established the Social and Environmental Management Unit (SEMU) in December 2006 to enable it to assist IPD officers and farmers to identify and address environmental and social issues in a timely and effective manner during operation,maintenance, rehabilitation, remodeling, construction of new canals and drains etc.

Punjab Irrigation Department (PID) and Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) goal in establishing Social and Environmental Management Unit (SEMU) is to create and implement a framework to enable the staff of the Punjab Irrigation Department (PID), Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) and the newly established Farmer Organizations (FOs) and Area Water Boards (AWBs), to identify adverse or beneficial social and environmental impacts that may potentially arise from their actions, and to select and implement mitigation options or measures that could result in enhancing environmental resources or social harmony.
